“The city of Nyleer isn't equipped to send a large force to hunt us down. They'll be sending word to Halvard, and then Nathair has to gather a force. A lot of them will be occupied with catching the more dangerous prisoners we set loose in the city. It'll buy us at least a few days,” Ren said, looking around at the others. Seated around him in the dim light were Anik, Ilias, Rafya, and a Lowlander by the name of Valkon, a man in his fifties with bright blue eyes and a scar that ran across the bridge of his nose. It was the man Ren had seen step forward as the first to attack the guards at the fence. His dark hair hung over his shoulders almost to his waist. Anik had picked Valkon from among the Lowlanders as the one with the most fighting experience.

They had spent the day packing supplies from the wagon into bags that could be carried by the men and assessing how much food they had and how long it would last. Among the food were two horns, and Anik instructed the men on watch to carry the horns and sound the alarm in case of an attack. They had all agreed that abandoning the wagon would be the best option. It would draw too much attention, and wagons were often subject to inspections in towns and villages.

By the time it became too dark to keep moving, Anik estimated they had moved a good twelve miles south. Ren had initially been worried about his condition, but he had ridden one of the horses they had stolen from the prison, and the Lowlanders seemed attentive to him, staying close by.

The spot they had picked for their camp site was hidden between the trees, with a slow stream nearby where they could refill their water skins and let the horses drink.

“The question is what we're going to do with this time,” Anik said, nursing a cup of watered wine from a bottle they had found on the wagon. “I know we need to rescue your brother, but we can't just march back to Stag's Run and fetch him. He might not even be there any longer. Most our men don't have horses.”

Thais might be dead, Ren thought. They all knew the possibility existed, but none of them said it. Ren wouldn't have wanted to listen, anyway. So long as there was even the slightest chance that Thais might be alive, Ren had to at least try to save him, even if he had to do it alone.

“Aren't there any forts in the area where we could ask for help? Ren
